How to Recover Lost Cryptocurrency

If cryptocurrency was sent to the wrong address, stolen, or lost in a suspected scam, act carefully. Blockchain transactions are often irreversible, but preserving evidence and reporting quickly may help exchanges, investigators, or authorities assess available options.

1. Preserve the details

Save transaction hashes (TXIDs), wallet addresses, network names, dates and times, amounts, exchange receipts, relevant messages, website addresses, and screenshots. Keep original files where possible and record where each item came from. Do not publish sensitive account details.

2. Check the transaction independently

Use a reputable blockchain explorer for the relevant network to review transaction status, destination address, and public transaction history. A public address does not by itself identify the real-world owner of a wallet, and tracing does not automatically mean funds can be frozen or returned.

3. Secure accounts and report promptly

4. Beware of recovery scams

Fraudsters may target victims a second time by promising guaranteed recovery, claiming special access to blockchains, or demanding advance “tax,” “unlocking,” or “gas” fees. Treat unsolicited direct messages and requests to install remote-control software with caution.

5. Understand realistic limits

Recovery depends on the facts, the destination of the funds, platform cooperation, jurisdiction, and whether assets can lawfully be identified or restrained. Blockchain analysis may produce leads; it does not guarantee recovery.
