How to Evaluate an Online Asset-Tracing Service

An asset-tracing service should be transparent about its methods, authority, costs, and limitations. Before hiring anyone, define what asset is involved and what evidence you can lawfully provide.

Clarify the asset and question

Specify whether the matter concerns a bank transfer, cryptocurrency, device, property, or another asset. A provider should explain which parts of the question it can and cannot address.

Verify identity and authorization

Check the provider's identity and any relevant license or professional status. Ask how it ensures the proposed work is lawful and what written authorization it requires.

Request a written scope and fee schedule

The agreement should describe deliverables, assumptions, exclusions, fees, cancellation terms, data handling, and whether any additional expenses require approval.

Ask how evidence is handled

Find out where documents are stored, who can access them, how long they are retained, and how they are securely deleted or returned.

Check for red flags

Avoid guaranteed recovery, secret access claims, threats, pressure tactics, or requests for passwords, private keys, and one-time codes. Be cautious of unexplained advance charges.

Understand the limits

Tracing can produce leads but does not itself confer legal authority to seize or return assets. Results depend on the evidence, applicable law, and cooperation of relevant parties.

Important: General educational information, not legal or financial advice. Outcomes depend on the facts and applicable law; no recovery or security result is guaranteed.
