What Should a Digital Forensics Report Include?

A useful digital forensics report should be understandable, transparent about its methods, and careful about the strength of its conclusions. Its format should fit the question being investigated and the intended audience.

Authority and scope

Identify the requester, authorization basis, items examined, questions asked, dates, and scope limitations. Do not imply permission to examine material that was outside the agreed authority.

Evidence inventory and handling

Describe each item sufficiently to distinguish it, and document acquisition, transfers, storage, access, and relevant integrity checks where applicable.

Methods and tools

Explain the procedures and tools used at a level that allows another qualified reader to understand the process. Record relevant versions, settings, and known limitations.

Findings with supporting context

Present observations and supporting artifacts, including timestamps and time-zone assumptions. Separate direct observations from interpretations and hypotheses.

Limitations and alternative explanations

Identify missing data, unavailable systems, clock differences, encryption, or other factors that constrain conclusions. Avoid claiming that an absence of evidence proves an event never occurred.

Conclusions and recommendations

Answer the agreed questions within the evidence limits, explain unresolved issues, and list practical next steps. A report should not overstate what the data establishes.
